Children Of Obese Mothers Prone To Asthma And Wheezing
According to a recently concluded study, children of obese or overweight women are more likely to suffer from asthma or wheezing.

There was a relationship between increasing maternal weight and increased risk of asthma symptoms, as per Professor Marjo-Riitta Jarvelin, study author from Imperial College London.

From Dailymail.co.uk:

‘There is over 3.5 times higher risk of having wheezing, and for current wheezing the risk was over four times higher.’

The researchers cannot definitely show that obesity causes respiratory symptoms among teenagers, but say it could be partly to blame for rising rates of asthma.

Previous studies have suggested that children of overweight mothers are exposed to increased levels of pro-inflammatory factors in the womb, which could influence their asthma risk.

The latest study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, involved almost 7,000 15 and 16-year-olds born in 1985 and 1986 in northern Finland.

Their mothers were questioned about their lifestyle, social background, and educational achievements when they were 12 weeks pregnant.

These new findings add to a very long list of the damaging effects of obesity in pregnancy, according to Professor Andrew Prentice, director of the Medical Research Council’s international nutrition group at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
